From the Director

Dear Friends of Hawaii Astronomy,

The festive holiday season is right around the corner, and I would like to take this opportunity to wish you and your family a very happy Thanksgiving! We appreciate your support of the Institute for Astronomy in every way, whether you are an interested community member, a student or teacher participant in TOPS or another educational project, a public lecture or stargazing attendee, a scientific collaborator, a government decision maker, an educational partner, or a donor or member of the Friends of Hawaii Astronomy. Thank you, all.

The highlights in this newsletter include a theory about the origin of water on Earth and a story about the NASA Infrared Telescope Facility, which has been a long-term success for both NASA and the IfA.

You will also find an item about making a gift of stock or mutual funds to support the educational and research programs of the Institute for Astronomy. Such a gift may provide a tax benefit for you. If you are interested in making any kind of charitable gift to the IfA before the end of the tax year, please don't hesitate to contact our development director, Joan Yanagihara, at joany@ifa.hawaii.edu or (808) 956-6712.

Once again, from the students, faculty, and staff of the Institute for Astronomy, a happy Thanksgiving and best wishes for the holidays!

Aloha,
Rolf-Peter Kudritzki
Director
Institute for Astronomy

Gifts of Stock or Mutual Funds

A gift of appreciated stock or other securities to the University of Hawaii Foundation for the benefit of the Institute for Astronomy may be a sensible way to have the full value of your gift assist the educational and research programs of the Institute while bypassing capital gains taxes.

To request a complimentary copy of our booklet, "Giving Securities," please contact Development Director Joan Yanagihara at joany@ifa.hawaii.edu or (808) 956-6712.
