From the Director

Dear Friends of Hawaii Astronomy,

This issue focuses on education and outreach, priorities of the Institute for Astronomy that have gained importance in recent years. We feature stories on the Mauna Kea Visitor Information Station (VIS), the IfA-produced poster calendar for Hawaii public and private schools, training volunteers to use the Starlab portable planetarium, and the new Astronomy 110 Laboratory course being offered at UH Manoa.

Many people don't realize that the Mauna Kea Visitor Information Station is open to the public seven days a week year-round, with stargazing every evening, guided summit tours on Saturdays and Sundays, and a program of lectures twice each month. Contributions from all of the telescope organizations help to operate the VIS, and we hope you will find the time to visit and learn about the exciting scientific activities conducted at the best observing site in the world.

The Institute has also intensified its efforts to collaborate with local schools and teachers as the Faulkes Telescope, the largest telescope in the world dedicated to education and outreach, approaches completion. The Starlab portable planetarium, purchased with funding from Victoria Ward, Limited, promises to be another important educational tool.

The Victoria Ward Starlab will be unveiled at the IfA's Open House, which is scheduled from 10:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., on Saturday, April 26, at our facility in Manoa. The Open House will launch Astronomy Week, which culminates with AstroDay2 in Hilo on May 3.

If you would like to exchange ideas and suggestions regarding education and outreach, please contact outreach coordinator, Dr. Jim Heasley, at 956-6826.

Aloha,

Rolf-Peter Kudritzki
