NASA LURE Certificate
In May, IfA Assistant Director Mike Maberry (right) accepted a certificate
for IfA Director Rolf-Peter Kudritzki from NASA Technical Officer David
Carter. The certificate recognizes the IfA's Lunar Ranging Experiment (LURE)
for its "support and dedication to the NASA Satellite Laser Ranging
(SLR) Program and the International Laser Ranging Service." LURE Observatory,
which was constructed on Haleakala in 1974, used a high-powered pulsed
laser to determine the distance between Earth and the Moon to an accuracy
of less than one inch, and to monitor the movement of Earth's tectonic
plates. The LURE SLR contract ended recently.
