Hawaii Space Flight Laboratory—Space Mission Development Capability at the University of Hawaii
Dr. Miguel Nunes
Hawaii Space Flight Laboratory, University of Hawaiʻi

The Hawaii Space Flight Laboratory (HSFL) was established in 2007 at the University of Hawaii as an Aerospace workforce development program for the University and state of Hawaii. HSFL works particularly as a small satellite (1-150 kg) mission development laboratory to launch space-based science missions. HSFL has worked on several satellite mission designs and launched HiakaSat in 2015, Neutron-1 in 2020, Hiapo in 2021, and is preparing to launch Ke Ao and the NASA Hyperspectral Thermal Imager (HyTI) in the Fall of 2022. New satellite missions for 2023 and beyond are currently in the development stages. With in-house engineering expertise and space instrument and development infrastructure, HSFL is prepared to extend its work with researchers across the University of Hawaii, particularly at the Institute for Astronomy (IfA). This presentation will provide an overview of the space mission development capabilities at HSFL and potential areas for collaboration with the IfA. We expect this collaboration will open up new and exciting opportunities to explore the Universe and lift off incredible space science 'Made in Hawaii'.
